“Do not profit by the blood of your fellow.” Leviticus 19:16
I chose this mitzvah because it relates to my life right now at Heller High and
how I aim to lead myself all the time. To me, this mitzvah means that we should
not succeed at the expense of others. While realistically this is impossible, it is
an amazing goal to pursue. It means that we should always be conscious of how
our actions impact others, and how our enjoyment can be accompanied by other
people’s suffering. This relates to Heller High because I know that when I’m having
fun, others are feeling left out or lonely at the same time. I’ve been on both sides of
the situation, and I try to limit breaking this commandment as much as I can. This
commandment is an overall guideline for being a Jew in the modern world because
we as Jews should be constantly conscious of how our actions affect others. We
have been the fellow off of whom others have profited, and we must recognize our
history while actively working not to put others in the position we’ve been in so many times.

This picture literally represents this commandment being broken by me just a
couple days ago, yet it can be interpreted figuratively. I am sitting on the back of a
camel who is treated terribly and lives an undeserved life. I felt guilt riding the camel
and watching it being treated the way it was. I knew there was something wrong
with what we were doing, but I couldn’t put the feeling into words. This commandment
puts that feeling into words. I was profiting by the blood of my fellow, the camel.
